What now?

When this blog first launched, exactly a year go, it was to chronicle my adventures through Egypt. The excavations were my first foray into the country, and I knew adventure awaited me. I had to make sure to capture it.

For a number of reasons, the blog died suddenly. There were no more updates. The adventures did not end, but the joy of writing ceased.

Even if I had kept it going, I would not have stayed in Egypt forever. The stories of excavations in the land of the pharaohs came to a close in December 2012. After that, I was to return to Michigan, where there would be no more excavations, no more playing in the sand, no more belly crawling through pyramids. And with that, there would be no more blog.

But I have had second thoughts. I don't want this blog to just disappear like that. I want to continue documenting my adventures, but not just in Egypt. Though the title of the blog indicates sand and desert, this will now be home to my travels throughout the world. I have visited many countries in my time, and hope to visit many more. Each one has its own unique blend of experiences which make for interesting stories.  I want to share those.

And I will occasionally dip into my memories as well. Stories from previous trips that had not been documented before will make appearances. Stories that needed years of reflection (and a greater vocabulary) to be told in a justified manner.

I will also try to remember stories from Egypt that had not made it into my textual history. Reflections. New pictures. Repressed memories.

The entries won't be in any chronological sequence as the first few were, but that is of little consequence. The important thing is to write, to get that humor back, the joy of writing. It has been missing as of late, and I hope to rekindle it.

I won't promise any sense of schedule. The entries will be written as I am inspired. I may write a few in succession, then disappear for a month. But at least I am getting into the spirit again.
